Chatham Square rental units going fast

A new housing complex in Lafayette is nearly at capacity.

Brinshore Development is still building rental units at its Chatham Square community on Greenbush Street. But Senior Vice President Peter Levavi says all but a few apartments are leased.

"Of the 89 rental units, we've lease 86 of them. Forty families have already moved in and the entire project will be finished out by February. The community center is up and running. It has a great exercise room, computer lab and tot lot, and a great community room. We've already had events there."

He says 22 of the 33 buildings are finished. Ten single-family, owner-occupied homes will be built at Chatham Square as well. One of those is already up and two more will be built by April.

Levavi credits the smooth construction and leasing process for all the interest in the Greenbush Street site.

"From the very beginning, we've had nothing but support from the city and redevelopment commission and from city staff. We've worked together seamlessly on the same side of the table, resolving all issues as they've arisen. And the results are out there to see. This is the most beautiful project we’ve ever built.”

Enrollment at Glen Acres Elementary School in Lafayette is expected to grow thanks to the new housing complex nearby.

Officials think the development could house as many as 150 school age children once all units are occupied. Levavi  says school administrators were concerned about the loss of students when the Bridgeway Apartments closed down.
