The Crawfordsville American Legion plans to bring the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall back next August – if the post can raise the $10,000 or more officials think will be necessary.

With still a year before the Wall arrives, Post 72 member Mike Spencer says the rules for the event are already clear.

Spencer says there won’t be any commerce at the site and disrespectful behavior won’t be tolerated.

“Some of these guys, it might be their last time to see the Wall,” Spencer says. “It also gives a chance for their family, maybe their grandkids and their children, a chance to see the Wall and maybe know and understand a little bit more about what happened in Vietnam. Maybe some of these people will open up to their families.”

Spencer says just transporting the wall to Crawfordsville costs in excess of $6,000 dollars.

To raise that kind of cash, he says the Legion plans to pursue many avenues of funding.

“We have talked to the mayor; he has said that he’s going to be able to do something for us here in Crawfordsville. I’m sure the county will be able to do something for us,” Spencer says. “We’re already in the process of putting out a letter to the corporate areas here in Crawfordsville.”

Fewer than ten Montgomery County residents died in the Vietnam War. Spencer says their names are included on the Wall.
