Few Incoming Purdue Students Affected By Trump's New Travel Ban

Purdue University

Very few freshmen in Purdue University’s incoming class are affected by President Trump’s latest immigration order. And for those students who are, the school is hoping to secure waivers of the travel ban.

Prospective Purdue students from countries affected by President Trump’s new executive order may face difficulty in obtaining their student visas if their waiver requests are denied.

But at the moment, there aren’t many. In fact, Director of International Student Services Christine Collins says just one new student from the six affected countries has been admitted for fall 2017.

Collins declined to say how many students from the affected countries had applied to Purdue.

Individuals from the six countries affected by the executive order are not able to apply for student visas, but Collins says there’s nothing preventing them from applying for waivers of the travel ban.

“On a case by case waiver, it’s possible that an official at the Department of State can decide that the visa is appropriate and issue the visa for the non-immigrant,” Collins says.

Purdue currently has about 100 students from the affected nations enrolled on the West Lafayette campus.
