Lafayette funds home energy improvements

Lafayette is allocating an additional $40,000 to make homes in the city more energy efficient.

The money comes from Community Development Block Grant funds.

Home owners in the Glen Acres and Vinton Neighborhoods can request up to $9,000  in assistance, but the extra money will help lower income families with some of the expense for projects that cost more than that.

Economic Development Project Manager Jennie Peterson says there are a handful of projects that are being financed and says they could help home owner save hundreds of dollars each year.

She says the goal is to make improvements to 80 homes.

The city already completed work on 35, with a second round of projects slated to begin within the next month.

The Department of Energy gave the city $720,000 to help pay for the work, as well.
