A longtime Lafayette lawyer will be going head-to-head with Tippecanoe County Prosecutor Pat Harrington in next year’s election.

Earl McCoy founded McCoy Law in Lafayette 15 years ago, and practices family and criminal law.

McCoy announced Friday on Facebook that he’s running for Tippecanoe County Prosecutor.

He cites concerns about the murder trial of a man who was acquitted on charges of killing a Lafayette schoolteacher.

Incumbent county prosecutor Pat Harrington said, in an emailed statement, he intends to seek reelection.

Harrington cites what he calls “successful prosecution in multiple high profile cases” as part of the reason he feels he deserves another term in office.

Full Statement:

"I have been honored and humbled to serve as Tippecanoe County Prosecutor and intend to seek reelection. I'm especially proud of our record since 2007 which includes successful prosecution in multiple high profile cases. The office is recognized among its peers for innovative community crime prevention programs and building collaborative partnerships with community leaders to solve public safety issues which confront our county. I look forward to the upcoming election as an opportunity for all citizens to learn more about the work of the prosecutor's office."

McCoy declined a request for an interview, saying he wanted to wait until the proper paperwork for his run has been filed.
