A crosswalk in a high traffic area on Purdue’s campus is set to be upgraded.

Officials with the university have informed the West Lafayette Traffic Commission of plans to improve markings at the intersection of Fourth and Russell streets.

Jim Knapp is Purdue’s Senior Civil Engineer in Physical and Capital Planning. He says a number of developments in the area meant it was time to upgrade the crosswalk.

"We recognized some time ago that there was a lot of pedestrian crossing in there. Now with the new development, with the Center for Student Excellence and Leadership and Waterfield Housing, and the Co-Rec, we expect to see a lot more pedestrians going in there."

Knapp says the goal is to make that part of campus more pedestrian and bike-friendly.

The project is slated for completion in time for the start of fall classes next year.
