Purdue and Daniels agree on contract

The Purdue Board of Trustees is scheduled to vote on Mitch Daniels' contract this week. A committee will take up the deal Friday afternoon, while the full board is set to vote Saturday morning.

Specifics of the arrangement have not been announced, but Daniels has insisted it be based largely on his performance in the job.  It's something he first mentioned shortly after he was announced as Purdue's next president. At the time, he said he didn’t know exactly what that would include, but wanted to find out.  Now, about a month away from taking the helm in West Lafayette, Daniels has a much better picture.

“Student affordability, student success, excellence and reputation and financial strength of the school – those are the basic baskets.”

Daniels says he wants to see greater accountability in higher education, and he hopes his new contract helps put Purdue in the lead on that issue.

“I hope that contract will be a first way to say the person in this job - his interests are completely aligned with the students and with the faculty and with the university’s success and if those things aren’t improving, there’s a consequence for me and vice versa.”

Former Purdue President France Cordova was paid approximately $475,000 during her last year in office.
