Purdue could be involved in an effort to teach 100-million children around the world to read.
The United States Agency for International Development is reaching out to universities across the country to aid in this effort.
Senior advisor for international education Christie Vilsack was on the West Lafayette campus yesterday.
She says Purdue would be an ideal partner because students and faculty are already involved in research to address the world’s biggest challenges.
USAID has created the “All Children Reading: A Grand Challenge for Development” contest, to find ways to facilitate this global literacy effort.
It offers $100,000 for the development of software to provide young people with necessary materials to learn to read in their native tongue.
