A group of Purdue researchers will lead a $5-million dollar effort to fight hunger in Africa.
The five-year program is designed to improve processing and marketing practices in order to reduce food waste.
Food Science professor Suzanne Nielsen says the goal is to make better use of food that is already being produced but is currently being lost through poor storage or processing technologies.
Nine researchers from Purdue's College of Agriculture and 11 from other universities in the United States and Africa will conduct research that will support and strengthen the process by which crops go from farm to market to fork.
The funding for the project comes from the USAID initiative known as Feed the Future.
It seeks to spur economic growth and trade to increase incomes and reduce hunger and poverty in partner countries around the world.
