Signs Designed For Tourists Grab Rave Reviews From Lafayette Locals

The City of Lafayette is adding wayfinding signs to help visitors find their way to key destinations.

Drivers can expect to see more of the large green and white directional signs that have recently popped up around Lafayette.

Economic Development Director Dennis Carson says the city plans to install more of the signs that are designed to point people to major destinations like Columbian Park, and music and arts venues.

“You know downtown is a whole destination, and then within downtown, where can you park?” he says. “What are some of the services? Where’s the shopping at? And also, to guide them over to West Lafayette, and then on to Purdue University as well, too.”

Visit Lafayette-West Lafayette President and CEO Jo Wade says the signage is doing more than help visitors find their way around the community.

She says it’s reminding local residents there’s a lot to do in their own backyards.

”They are much more likely to take people there when they have visiting family and friends, or maybe spend some time there themselves,” she says.

Wade says tourism, leisure and business, attracts about 4 million people and generates $300 million annually in Tippecanoe County.

The Lafayette Redevelopment Commission agreed Wednesday to pay an Indianapolis engineering firm $26,000 to draw up plans for additional signs in the city center, as well as on State Road 38 East, and possibly I-65.

The city initially paid the firm $26,000 to design the 60 signs that are now installed.

Carson says the new signs should be up within a year.
