Former Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter visited his hometown of Lafayette Thursday to make his first public statements in a bid to regain his former position.
Before his current tenure as the state’s top lawyer, Greg Zoeller served as deputy under then-Attorney General Steve Carter. Now that Zoeller is vacating the position to vie for a seat in the U.S House of Representatives, Carter wants his old job back.
In his first public comments since announcing his candidacy, the Republican focused on his commitment to consumer protection and privacy, including reminding the assembled reporters he started the state’s do-not-call-registry.
However, Carter says he hopes to tailor that protection to fit the state’s current needs.
“We see a lot of changes in technology,” he says. “We used to think about scams that were targeted at the elderly and concerned with communicated with them, but now we see a lot of scams targeting young people because much of them spend a lot of their lives online.”
Carter also says he hopes to crack down on public corruption in local government.
He’ll have to win the Republican nomination over current Assistant AG Abby Kuzma, Logansport Senator Randy Head and Elkhart County Prosecutor Curtis Hill, Jr.
