United Way of Greater Lafayette kicks-off 2013 campaign

The United Way of Greater Lafayette is kicking off the next phase of its annual fundraising campaign. The goal is $4.9 million, a slight increase from last year.

CEO James Taylor says the needs in the community continue to grow, especially in the local chapter’s focus areas of education, income and health.

“All of those things are interrelated. They work off of each other. They make a lot of sense, so we’ve really seen a lot of resonance in education-income-health,” he says. “It also reflects what we’ve done for 90 years now.”

The Pacesetter portion of the campaign began several weeks ago and has raised nearly 30% of the overall goal.

Al Gatmaitan, president & CEO of Indiana University Health Arnett, is chairing the effort this year. He says the companies that have stepped up already have done a great job getting the fundraising started, but everyone needs to be involved.

“Health care is your nutrition, your exercise, your ability to have and sustain a good job. Of course, that goes into education, literacy. It goes into income, jobs and so forth,” Gatmaitan says. “The United Way weaves all three of those together. By doing so, we hope to have the greatest impact.”

Money raised goes to the local chapter’s 23 partner agencies, such as Meals on Wheels, Wabash Center and Bauer Family Resources.

The annual campaign wraps up November 21. More information about the United Way, agencies it funds and how to give is HERE.
