(Updated) Purdue: Comedian Agreed To PG-rated Show, Won't Be Asked Back

Purdue University

UPDATE (3:20 p.m., August 21):

Public relations representatives for comedian Andy Gross have begun circulating an apology for the performer's act during Purdue's Boiler Gold Rush freshman orientation.

Rebecca Kaufman, a lawyer with Beverly Hills, California firm Glassman Media Group, says Gross is not consenting to taped interviews, but sent a statement which reads, in part:

"Andy Gross is profoundly sorry that students at Purdue University were offended during his show this past weekend.  Andy was oblivious and naive about the current environment on college campuses, and he sincerely regrets causing any offense or discomfort to any student participating. Andy has chosen to no longer perform on college campuses in the future. Further, he plans to change the parts that upset Purdue’s students.  Again, Andy Gross sincerely regrets causing offense or discomfort."

EARLIER:

A Purdue University spokesman says the school will no longer work with comedian Andy Gross following an inappropriate comedy performance during the school’s freshman orientation.

Gross has come under fire for what some are calling sexual harassment after his show included him instructing a female student to stand back-to-back with him and touch his leg, saying he needed to “feel her vibrations.”

Then, after appearing to botch a card trick, Gross commented how he, in his words, got a “free feel out of it.” He also told a male student to sit in his lap and mimic a ventriloquist’s doll.

Many students walked out of the performance, and Purdue’s official statement pronounces the school “proud” of students “who are standing up and voicing their concerns.”

Following the show, a wave of social media users started circulating the hashtag #AndyGrossIsGross.

In an e-mail to WBAA, Purdue spokesman Tim Doty says Gross was recommended to school officials for performances to college audiences and had agreed to do what was billed as a PG-rated show.

Calls to Gross went unanswered Monday.

*Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated Andy Gross was booked for an upcoming performance on NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon." A show representative says he is not scheduled to appear on the program.
