Wisconsin Outruns Purdue Women In 65-56 Win

Long scoring droughts plagued both ends of the court, but Wisconsin was able to make up for lost time with a late second-half run that led to a 65-56 win.

While Wisconsin shot 45-percent from the field, Purdue flailed, making just 31-percent of its shots. This meant longer dry spells for the Boilers and more time for the Badgers to bank 12 points off of 11 Purdue turnovers.

"Our transition defense was God-awful in the last four minutes and that's when they got a run," Purdue coach Sharon Versyp said.

Versyp says she's less disappointed in the team not being able to make outside shots and more with the lack of "fire" she has seen on the court.

The Badgers struggled to shoot even 40-percent until the last leg of the game. But they made five of their seven field goal attempts in the last five minutes while Purdue only made two of its final eleven.

"Once we stopped that (lay-ups), it kind of slowed their momentum down," said Wisconsin coach Bobbie Kelsey. "We needed this one to prove to ourselves we could get on the road and get a win."

This was the first Big Ten road victory of the season for Wisconsin. The Badgers now stand 3-3 in the conference.

Tessa Cichy led the Badgers with 12 points and seven rebounds. Whitney Bays paced the Boilers with 18 points. Liza Clemons collected nine rebounds.

The Boilers (9-8 overall, 2-4 Big Ten) will face Nebraska on the road Jan. 19.
