A former judge from Northwest Indiana is seeking the Democratic nomination for attorney general.

Judge Lorenzo Arredondo was a Lake County circuit court judge for more than three decades. He was also the first Latino judge elected in the state of Indiana and the longest serving elected Latino state trial judge in the U.S. when he retired in 2010.

Arrendondo hasn’t made an official campaign announcement but has filed the paperwork to form a campaign committee.

Political analyst Ed Feigenbaum says Arredondo is well-respected and could not only clinch the Democratic nomination but make a good run in the general election as well.

“Certainly as a new face on the scene statewide, a guy who has not put himself up for election beyond Lake County, a guy who unquestionably has strong legal skills, he may be a very interesting candidate for attorney general,” Feigenbaum says.

Arredondo will seek to replace current Republican Attorney General Greg Zoeller, who is stepping down to run for Indiana’s Ninth Congressional District. The Democratic and Republican nominees for attorney general will be chosen during their respective party conventions next summer.
