Purdue's new chiller earns university a rebate

Purdue is benefiting from being energy efficient. The university received a rebate check for $81,000. It comes from an Energizing Indiana program in conjunction with Duke Energy as an incentive for businesses to make system improvements.

Vice President of Physical Facilities Bob McMains says the money will help the university become more energy efficient.

“We have a combined heat and power tank we’re going to put it in. We’re switching our Number Two boiler from coal to gas,” he says. “The combined heat and power unit will actually help us to produce electricity and with the waste steam we’ll heat the campus – use that same energy twice.”

The rebate was for the new 2,700 ton centrifugal chiller at the Northwest Chiller Plant. It represents 11% of the chiller’s purchase price.

Ken Armstrong with Energizing Indiana says the money comes from five utilities in the state to encourage facilities to be more environmentally friendly.

“This incentive was $81,000. So you can imagine how much energy they’re saving for us to be able to give them $81,000 for doing something like this.”

He says Purdue is always on the cutting edge for doing the right thing for energy purposes.

The chiller was installed last summer and began operating in the fall.
