Grants available to fight drug, alcohol and tobacco use

The Drug-Free Coalition of Tippecanoe County is taking grant applications this month. The organization funds agencies developing and implementing programs that deal with prevention, treatment, and law enforcement.

Coalition Director Kate Kerrigan says grants will go to about 15 local groups working to reduce the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs among kids and adults.

“Some of those getting grants in the past have been Big Brothers-Big Sisters for their mentoring program. Some of the money is used for the prevention programs we do in the schools,” she says.

The SURF Center’s Alcoholics Anonymous program, the court systems and juvenile probation also have received funding in the past.

Kerrigan says the granting priorities are guided by the Coalition’s Comprehensive Community Plan.

“The prevention dollars are always tight,” she says. “So, we will do partial grants. If someone asks for $20,000 and we see the ability to give them $15,000 – it’s not an all-or-nothing kind of thing. So, that helps a lot of people.”

The grant application deadline is May 1 at 4 p.m. The funding will be awarded in August. More information is HERE.
