Money Smart Week promotes financial literacy

Indiana is celebrating the second annual Money Smart Week.

Secretary of State Connie Lawson discussed the importance of the program this morning at Ivy Tech in Lafayette.

She says Indiana’s educational system does not require teaching students the basics of personal finance.

Lawson says that leaves young adults ill-equipped to handle important decisions involving money and more at-risk of finding themselves in debt.

She says community groups, financial institutions, government agencies, educational organizations, and financial experts have organized nearly 100 presentations throughout the state this week.

Topics covered include first-time home buying, talking to kids about money, and scams against seniors.
