United Way of Greater Lafayette 2013 campaign at slower pace

The United Way of Greater Lafayette is 54% of the way to its annual fundraising campaign goal. However, community donations are lower than they were a year ago.

CEO James Taylor says, with fewer than five weeks to go, raising awareness is key to helping those in need.

“Part of what we want to do is beat the drum and help people understand that now is the time to be making their gifts and doing whatever they can to help us reach that goal.”

The campaign is aiming for a $4.9 million target. So far, $2.66 million has been pledged.

“It is ‘Go time,’” Taylor says.

He thinks the recent government shutdown and overall economic uncertainty has not been reassuring to those who may consider giving. However, Taylor says the funding the United Way provides to partner agencies helps them improve their services and operate more efficiently.

"As so much of the funding that comes in from the federal government and state government is very clearly earmarked for specific kinds of things, we believe that it's even more important for us to be able to provide that level of flexibility to those organizations, so that they can adjust their services to meet the realities that they're facing day to day."

The United Way campaign wraps up November 21.
