Plans being made for future U.S. 231 and Cumberland Ave intersection

Tippecanoe County Commissioners have approved rezoning property around the future intersection of U.S. 231 and Cumberland Avenue.

The roughly 68.6 acres will go from a Residential to a General Business designation. There are two parcels – 23 acres sit west of 231, while the other 45 acres are east of the highway.

Attorney Joe Bumbleburg is representing the landowners. He says while the property is in the county now, it is part of the area West Lafayette is annexing, so they have met with city officials about the future of the site.

“I’ve been in consultation with the city attorney about how do we put into place like no dirty book store, no billboards,” he says. “We don’t have any problem with that.”

The commissioners’ vote Monday follows unanimous support from the Area Plan Commission. However, the APC’s staff recommendationwas to have the West Lafayette Council determine future land use.

Attorney Joe Bumbleburg says his clients want to do the right thing and have been talking with West Lafayette Director of Development Chandler Poole.

“Mr. Poole was at the meeting the other night of the Area Plan Commission and spoke on behalf of this project and represented to the commission that the City of West Lafayette would like to see this move forward,” he says, “so we can start our negotiations with them.”

The property that will be on the southeast corner of 231 and Cumberland also is General Business, while it’s Neighborhood Business on the southwest corner.
