The gay marriage debate is expected to start in the US supreme court today, but how do justices go about navigating the varying states with varying same-sex marriage bans?

David Orentlicher with the IU McKinney School of Law says the justices will likely roll many states together.

This means that instead of several decisions having to be made, one over-arching decision on same sex marriage bans is likely to be applied.

"They're not gonna get any different kind of a resolution by taking Utah instead of Indiana or Wisconsin instead of Virginia," says Orentlicher. "There's really not much to drive them one way or the other."

This is the first time the justices have met since early July of this year.
