Federal authorities say if you‘re thinking about wearing those decorative contact lenses for Halloween, don‘t.

Federal police agencies have seized more than 20,000 pairs of the lenses on 74 different occasions this year.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement Spokesperson Gail Montenegro says they‘re counterfeit lenses mostly imported from China.

"It is extremely dangerous to purchase counterfeit, decorative contact lenses for a Halloween costume," says Montenegro. "Only a medical professional, an optometrist or an ophthalmologist, should be prescribing any sort of contact lens."

Montenegro says they‘ve noted in past years that the lenses can do serious eye damage.

They‘re mostly available at gas stations, flea markets, beauty supply and pawn shops.

Montenegro says they‘re working with the Food and Drug Administration and U.S. Customs and Border Protection to intercept shipments of the lenses.
