Former Congressman Baron Hill (D- 9th) has announced he’ll seek the seat of retiring Republican Senator Dan Coats. Hill is the first Democratic candidate to enter the race.

Hill’s online statement says he hopes run a campaign focused on middle-income Hoosiers.

"I’m going to fight for the middle class people in the state, many of which have not caught up with the economic recovery. That’s going to be my focus and I’ll focus like a laser beam on it," Hill says.

Hill served five terms in Washington before losing his House seat to Republican Todd Young, whom he may face again in this election.

Young has not officially declared his candidacy, big-name GOP donors are encouraging him to run.

Congressman Marlin Stutzman (R-9th)  and former Coats chief of staff Eric Holcomb are the only declared Republicans seeking their party’s nomination.

Few Democrats are openly considering a Senate run, including Representative Christina Hale (D-Indianapolis). Some Democrats hope to see former Senator Evan Bayh return to the seat he left in 2010, but he has not yet declared interest in the race.
