Daniels wanted historian's book banned when governor

The Associated Press is reportingthat when Purdue President Mitch Daniels was governor, he took rare steps to eliminate what he considered liberal breeding grounds at Indiana’s public universities.

The email exchange in February of 2010 shows Daniels requested that historian Howard Zinn’s writings be banned from classrooms and that he asked for a “cleanup” of college courses he called “propaganda.”

Zinn, who died in January of 2010, is author of “A People’s History of the United States,” a best seller that inspired people to rethink American history.

In an email to the Associated Press, Daniels says he stands by his comments and actions.

He writes: “We must not falsely teach American history in our schools.”

And goes onto say: “We have a law requiring state textbook oversight to guard against frauds like Zinn, and it was encouraging to find that no Hoosier school district had inflicted his book on its students.”
