IN Farm Bureau hires retail ag business specialist

A new member of the Indiana Farm Bureau staff hopes to help small farms and those focused on specialty crops. Bob White was hired as IFB’s retail agriculture business specialist.

He has a background in agricultural finance and natural resources, as well as economic and policy development. However, White says he needs to hear from members who want help.

“Tell your regional manager or tell your county farm bureau president or board member, ‘Hey, this issue is bothering me. Is it bothering other folks the same as it is me?’” he says. “Maybe I can help, maybe I can’t, but that’s the way we get started.”

White plans to offer training sessions on different business topics and collaborating with some non-traditional agriculture groups to tap into their knowledge. He hopes the end result of his efforts increases IFB members’ profitability.

White says he’s focusing on the economic development aspect of agriculture and the jobs created.

“I work with some of the local economic developers in the various counties to emphasize that. Hey, agriculture is important!” he says. “What we hope to do is assist members to increase their profitability on their farms, and spread their risk so they don’t have all their eggs in one basket.”

He expects to help smaller farm operations and those who deal with specialty crops.
