Holiday Programs for Thanksgiving Day

Giving Thanks (8-10am FM101.3): Whether you’re up early in the kitchen, on the road to a family gathering, or relaxing after the feast, Giving Thanks provides the perfect atmosphere for Thanksgiving: the warmth of great music, and truly memorable words. With music and stories for Thanksgiving, its Giving Thanks. New for 2013, two wise, witty women join host John Birge and us at the table: The celebrated writer and actor Julia Sweeney, whose memoires and monologues on faith give her humor a deep human touch that’s perfect for Thanksgiving, and Anne Lamott, best-selling author of Bird by Bird and Operating Instructions. Classical music is the heart and soul of the original Giving Thanks, and this year is no exception, featuring pianist Simone Dinnerstein, soprano Dawn Upshaw and composer Eric Whitacre.

Turkey Confidential (11a-1pm AM920): On Thursday, November 28, help is on the way for Thanksgiving cooks, kitchen helpers and dinner guests on this, the biggest cooking day of the year. Lynne Rossetto Kasper, award-winning host of public radio's national food show The Splendid Table®, will answer listener questions throughout the live, two-hour program. Quickly becoming a Thanksgiving morning tradition, past shows have included everything from a cross-country trucker cooking his Thanksgiving dinner on the manifold to a panicked first-time cook who didn't realize a turkey needs to be thawed. Lynne handles all questions with wit, expertise and laughter.

Thanksgiving with Cantus (2-3pm FM101.3): One of America’s premiere men’s vocal ensembles, Cantus talks with Alison Young about the holiday, music and food.

Eighteen years at WBAA! Where has the time gone? I worked here as a Program Host/Producer from 1995 to 2001, hosting classical music, Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and the weekly 20th-century classical music series “The Kostraba Conundrum.” After a short stint as Program Director at a public radio station in Kansas, I moved with my family to Toledo to serve as Classical Music Director at WGTE-FM, staying for seven years. One of my highlights there was winning the 2007 Ohio Public Broadcasting Award for "Radio Producer of the Year" for my monthly in-studio performance program “Live From FM 91” and special programs celebrating the lives and music of composers William Grant Still and Samuel Adler. As much as I loved northwest Ohio, it was a joy to return home to Greater Lafayette in 2009 as Program Director (now Content Director) of this remarkable station: freshening our sound, developing the WBAA Arts Spotlight, hosting Afternoon Classics, and in general deepening our relationships with the arts community.
