In the wake of thefts by Russian hackers of more than a billion pieces of online user data, the City of Indianapolis is planning a day-long cybersecurity summit aimed at protecting the city’s infrastructure from internet criminals.

Public Safety Director Troy Riggs says attempts have been made to hack into the city‘s $73 million communications platform -- the one that protects emergency radio communications, computer traffic and more than 1.4-million 911 calls per year.

Riggs says the city has reached out to its corporate partners to reduce its vulnerability to an attack. He adds the city needs a two-fold approach to protection from its systems.

"They're trying to keep [the city's computers] from succumbing to a cyber attack, but if their systems do shut down, that their systems have the resiliency to get back up to speed as quickly as possible," Riggs says.

The city’s cybercrime summit will feature congressional and homeland security experts, as well as corporate leaders.
