Jeff H.S considers degree criteria changes

Graduation requirements may be changing for some local high school students.

Those pursuing an academic honors diploma or higher at Jefferson High School currently have to meet four citizenship components.

However, Principal Jeff Studebaker says this criteria is not proving as effective as initially expected.

"They (students) are not doing the activities because they are thinking, in the back of their head, that I am doing these things so I can get the citizenship requirement met.  It's just a by-product of it,"  he said.  "The way that it stands right now is not functioning the way we envisioned it four years ago.  It's probably not necessary."

This is the first graduating class to have to meet the requirements.

Studebaker says about 55 kids are studying for an academic honors degree.

The school board plans to discuss making the changes in January.  If members agree to do so, they wouldn't take effect until the 2013-2014 school year.
