Lafayette group wants new lights on the courthouse

The Friends of Downtownare trying to get new holiday lights for the Tippecanoe County Courthouse.

The group wants to replace the current lights with more efficient LED ones, and add eight more strands.

Friends Treasurer Steve Bultinck says they want to make the courthouse look less like a lampshade and more like a Christmas tree.

"We want to extends the lights from where they hook-up at the top, all the way down to the roofline."

He says the idea was just talk among friends who organize the Mosey Down Main Streetprogram.

"Now, it's taken on a whole new life."

The goal is to raise about 30,000 for the project. Bultinck says they have nearly half raised already through Friends events, and hopes to get the remainder in the six weeks, so they’re ready for this year.

"We're looking for the community to step in and help us get the first phase funded. We think it's going to look absolutely beautiful the way it's done - start making downtown more of a destination point during the holidays."

The annual lighting event is December 1 in conjunction with the Dickens of a Christmasevent.

Donations may be sent to Friends of Downtown at P.O. Box 684. Lafayette, IN  47902-0684.  Donations of $25 or more will be matched with funds already secured by Friends of Downtown.
