Local unemployment rises in May, steady statewide

Unemployment is up by more than one-percent in West Lafayette compared to a month prior.

The city’s rate was 5.3-percent in May compared to 4.2 in April.

Lafayette is experiencing a similar trend, but not as drastic.

There, the unemployment jumped from 7.4 in April to 7.8 last month.

Tippecanoe County as a whole in May was at seven-percent, more than a half-of-a-percent more than in April.

Statewide, the unemployment rate remained unchanged during that time at 7.9-percent.

That’s three tenths less than the national average.
