A long-time member of the Lafayette Police Department’s K9 unit is retiring this month.

Tico is a 10 year old Belgian Malinois who has spent the last 8 years with the department. The dog’s retirement comes on the heels of persistent hip problems.

During his career, Tico has been involved in more than 1,600 police related deployments.  He's assisted in the arrest of many suspects as well as uncovered more than 70 pounds of marijuana, cocaine, meth, crack cocaine, and heroin.

Instead of sniffing out criminals and illegal narcotics, Tico will spend his days at the home of Officer Albert Demello, who has been his handler.

Tico’s official retirement date will be November 11, 2013.  The Lafayette Police Department is in the process of funding a replacement dog, which will be chosen in the coming weeks.
