Mixed-use complex planned for WL's State Street Corner

West Lafayette’s downtown may soon look a little different.

The Tippecanoe Area Plan Commission approved a rezoning request that makes way for a five story apartment and retail complex.

The building will be on the corner of State Street next to Brothers Bar.

Purdue Student Body President Joe Rust says the project is a positive for the area.

"This year our administration in student government will be pushing for a lot of campus development so students have more options, whether that be for living, or food, and night life as well." he said.  "I believe this option is a great opportunity for students for all of those."

The project includes 24 apartments and a CVS pharmacy.

However, it would displace the “Where Else Bar” which informed the commission it would not return to the site if the project moves forward.

Instead, a full service restaurant would be placed in the complex’s basement.

Area business owner Tom Arth says this type of project is too large for the area.

"The project overdevelops the corner of State and Northwestern.  It thereby dwarfs and hides other businesses," he said.  "No other building in that area of the Village is over three stories tall."

The West Lafayette City Council will vote on the plan at its July 2nd meeting.
