Program gives area kids a head start on kindergarten

A local program is designed to help children with little or no preschool experience transition into kindergarten.

The Kindergarten Countdown Camp is sponsored by the United Way of Greater Lafayette and IU Health Arnett.

It serves approximately 60 children at Lafayette’s Miller Elementary School and Tippecanoe County’s Klondike Elementary.

Organizers say the goal is to improve the students’ literacy and familiarize them with basic classroom procedures.

The program is provided at no cost to participants, and each child receives a backpack full of school supplies to further increase their chances of success in kindergarten.
