Purdue master plan promotes compact growth

Purdue’s director of Physical and Capital Planning says the university’s master plan is a balance between preserving the university’s history and looking toward the future.

Ken Sandel made the comments during a President's Forum on the West Lafayette campus.

He says there has been an explosion of growth in the past decade, including 52 new buildings with nine more under construction.

He says much of the new construction such as Discovery Park and Armstrong Hall have a more modern feel, but still tie into the overall look of campus.

Sandel says the master plan includes expanded use of public transportation as the perimeter road pushes more vehicles to the outer edges of campus.

He says another focus is the development of State Street and Third Street as the main corridors through campus.

Sandel says the goal is to have plenty of mixed-use facilities in a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly environment.
