Red Cross shelter in Lafayette serving stranded motorists, residents without power

Faith East in Lafayette is serving as a Red Cross emergency shelter.

Director of Community Ministries Andre Ballard says they set-up operations Sunday evening and shortly after, a busload of travelers came in when the interstate closed.

“And ever since, it’s been a constant flow of people,” he says, “for those who are stuck on the road or in other situations, who could come by and utilize the facility.”

He says the shelter will stay open as long as needed. Approximately 80-people were staying there as of Monday morning.

“We were able to feed the group (from the bus) who hadn’t eaten in a while,” Ballard says. “Some of them had not had the opportunity to shower in a while, so they used our locker room facilities.”

Warming centers are set-up at Faith West in West Lafayette and McCallister Center in Lafayette.
