Road Construction Shifting Into High Gear In West Lafayette

Drivers can expect even more delays when traveling around West Lafayette.

The intersection of Happy Hollow Road and River Road shuts down to all traffic starting today.

West Lafayette Public Works Director Dave Buck expects the closure to last nearly six weeks.

Buck says detours will be clearly marked in all directions, although many residents are used to having to find alternate routes in that area.

“Because the river often closes different parts of River Road anyway, we’re pretty sure that folks know what to do when there’s a closure going on,” he says.

Buck says crews will be raising the road’s elevation at the intersection about 2 feet to prevent the flooding that happens at least once a year.

He says another traffic detour is set to begin this week on Cumberland Avenue at Salisbury Street.

Buck says it’s only a partial closure, though, because through traffic will still be allowed on Salisbury.

“They’ll take the traffic signal down and Salisbury will be open," says Buck. "There will be some lane shifting going on on Salisbury to make room for the intersection work and construction to happen. But Salisbury traffic won’t have to stop north and south.”

Both projects are expected to wrap up before the start of school in August.
