Road work, raises for city employees boost WL's 2013 budget

The West Lafayette City Council is expected to take a final vote tonight on the 2013 budget. The spending plan is a little more than $18 million, which is 92.% more than this year’s budget.

It includes money for road work at Salisbury Street and Navajo Drive, and Happy Hollow Road. There also is a 2% raise for city employees, but not elected officials.

Councilor Ann Hunt says she’d like to review those in the coming year.

"The Tippecanoe County council gets $12,000 a year, and they're trying to get healthcare. We don't give our part time people healthcare and I think that's something to think about."

West Lafayette City Council members currently earn $4,800 per year.

Hunt is serving her third term on the council. She says there's never been an increase in pay in that time.

"When you realize that it hasn't been raised in at least nine years and maybe before that, we're way behind and do we really want to catch up? And I haven't heard any comments from my counselors or anybody about it, so I don't know what people feel."

Tonight’s West Lafayette City Council meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in city hall.
