The total in delinquent tax payments collected through Indiana’s tax amnesty program continues to increase as the state processes payments.
When the state closed its tax amnesty period – which allowed people to pay back taxes without penalties, interest or fines – it announced it had collected about $100 million, with another $21 million promised by June through payment plans.
As the Department of Revenue continues processing payments sent in by the November 16 deadline, it now says more than 65,000 taxpayers have sent in about $137 million in total, with that number expected to grow even more.
The first $90 million from tax amnesty is earmarked for specific projects – $84 million for the Regional Cities Initiative and $6 million for the Hoosier State Passenger Rail Line. The rest goes into the state’s General Fund.
