Students at Oakland High School are putting together a plan to make streets around the school safer.
A group has put together a proposal to add a speed bump, and potentially improved signage, that will help slow traffic.
Senior Mallory Peters says there have been 60 incidents in the past year in which cars have hit pedestrians in the Lafayette area, and this is particularly concerning for places where students are walking
The Oakland students presented the proposal to a panel at Purdue as part of the Ackerman Center for Democratic Citizenship’s Project Citizen initiative, an effort is to introduce young people to how government works.
The panel also listened to presentations yesterday regarding diversity at Purdue and undocumented students at Ivy Tech.
Ackerman Center Assistant Director Asta Balkute says there is great value in students getting actively involved in politics at a young age.
The Oakland students plan to take their proposal to city officials to help secure funding. They expect the speed bump project to cost about $5,000.
