TIF Districts Cash In For Greater Lafayette

Future funding from 10 of Greater Lafayette’s tax increment financing, or TIF, districts will allow the city to both expand small-business growth and fix local infrastructure.

That was the message Tuesday evening at a joint meeting of the Lafayette, Tippecanoe County and West Lafayette Redevelopment Commissions.

Jason Semler is a partner with HJ Umbaugh, an Indianapolis accounting firm that estimated TIF revenue for Lafayette and county districts. He says most project the city is planning need TIF funds to pay them off, saying, "the only way that they'd be able to fund many of these projects is through property taxes or income taxes."

Semler estimates Tippecanoe County and Lafayette’s taxing districts will generate close to 14 million dollars in revenue in 2019 -- marginally higher than 2018’s total.
