Area Plan Commission members voted in support of two rezoning requests for developments in Greater Lafayette.
The first will allow Alcoa to expand production on its existing property in Lafayette. The new $90 million facility will house an aluminum lithium casting production line, which will add 75 full-time jobs.
APC Assistant Director Ryan O’Gara says the project represents an important step for economic development in Lafayette.
"Once it's under construction I think that's going to send a significant message that Lafayette is open for business with respect to industrial users in our industrial areas. And the Alcoa site is one of the first."
Commission members also are in favor of a proposal for a new apartment complex near Purdue’s campus. The property owner is requesting rezoning to construct a 125-unit apartment complex on the corner of Grant and Harrison streets in West Lafayette.
O’Gara thinks the project sets a new tone for developments in that area.
"It brings an amenity package you just don't see with a lot of other projects, because of its size and its significance. And so I think it certainly raises the bar for higher-density apartment living near campus."
Plans for the complex include roughly 280 bedrooms and a parking garage with as many spaces. There also is a fitness center and a pool deck exclusive to residents.
With recommendations from the APC, both proposals now go to the respective city councils for final consideration.
