As the city of Lafayette finalizes its Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan, officials in West Lafayette and Tippecanoe County are looking into developing similar documents.

Area Plan Commission Senior Transportation Planner Doug Poad says the county has started preparing to put a plan together, including noting the location of all existing sidewalks, bicycle lanes, and trails, based on satellite photography.

“In addition to that we just finished up last year a crash report looking at bicycle and pedestrian crashes throughout the entire county," says Poad. "We did some interesting analysis and that will help determine, possibly, projects and areas that need additional studies.”

But Poad says the county wants to wait until Lafayette and West Lafayette have plans in place so those documents can be incorporated into a county-wide plan.

West Lafayette Public Works Director Dave Buck says he’d like to develop a more robust plan, similar to Lafayette’s.

He says in January the city applied for a $20,000 grant from the State Department of Health to do so, and was willing to match it with $20,000 in local money, but the city didn’t receive the grant.

Buck says the city plans to apply for more grants to fund the master plan process.

Lafayette officials say their plan is about 75% complete. They are holding a final public meeting Wednesday night and expect the document to be complete later this summer.
