Young Undecided On Support For Trump Emergency Declaration

Feb 15, 2019

Sen. Todd Young (R-Ind.) won’t say whether he’ll support President Donald Trump’s emergency declaration to build a wall on the southern border with Mexico.

Young voted for a funding deal that falls far short of Trump’s fiscal request.

Some Indiana lawmakers – including Young’s fellow Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.) – voted against the government funding deal. Braun says it didn’t sufficiently fund border security.

But Young calls the bill a “strong down payment” on border security.

“It’s also important to keep the government running," Young says. "People sent us to Washington to provide the basic services of government.”

Trump’s agreement to the deal is coupled with an emergency declaration he’ll use to shift money toward his border wall. But Young won’t commit to supporting that.

“So, I need to learn more about what statutory authority the president will be relying on for that,” Young says.

Braun is already fully behind Trump’s emergency declaration.
