air pollution

The Sierra Club says it’s suing BP for air quality violations at its Whiting Refinery that have harmed northwest Indiana residents’ health. The Hoosier chapter of the organization filed suit against the company in a federal district court on Friday.

As coal plants shut down in Indiana, the state gets less money from the air permit fees that companies pay to put pollution in the air. That means fewer dollars are going to the people and equipment needed to run the state’s air permitting program.

Indiana ranks 14th for asthma-related deaths in the U.S. In 2016, there were about six times as many tick-borne illnesses in the state than there were a decade before. Health experts say rising temperatures are making these issues and others worse — and it’s time the U.S. addressed them.

Even though Indiana’s air quality is improving, the American Lung Association says climate change is making it harder to protect people’s health. That’s the takeaway from the latest State of the Air report

The Environmental Protection Agency is reconsidering the reasoning behind its rule that limits air pollutants from coal and oil-fired power plants. An expert says that could lead to the standards’ undoing and more coal pollution in Indiana.

Part of the new Affordable Clean Energy rule announced Tuesday would focus on making coal plants more efficient — which could help them run for longer. But utility advocates say that’s unlikely to change energy companies’ plans.

The state is moving forward with plans to stop posting air pollution notices in newspapers, despite opposition. The notices let people know if someone has applied for a permit to put contamination into the air. Now the majority of those would be online or sent via email.

A former Environmental Protection Agency employee, two Indiana lawmakers, and environmentalists opposed the EPA’s plans to change clean car standards at a press conference Monday. The standards require new cars and light trucks build after 2025 to get about 50 miles to the gallon.

Indiana used to have to post public notices in newspapers when a company applied for a permit to put pollution into the air. But the Indiana Department of Environmental Management wants to move away from paper ads.

Report: Indiana Air Pollution Hurts Hoosier Health

Apr 18, 2018

A new national report outlines the impact of pollution in Indiana on public health and finds communities across the state register significant negative impacts.

Indianapolis, South Bend and Madison rank low for communities that experience poor air quality leading to asthma, respiratory and cardiovascular conditions. American Lung Association Senior Vice President Paul Billings says factors like vehicle traffic impact air quality in northern and central Indiana.
