Indiana House Democrats sent a letter to the governor’s office asking the state to better protect the safety of essential workers.The state’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has seen thousands of non-formal COVID-19 complaints related to various safety issues in the past month.

Indiana State Health Commissioner Dr. Kris Box rebuffed questions Tuesday about providing more specific information about COVID-19 outbreaks at nursing homes.

Purdue University President Mitch Daniels said Tuesday the school intends to welcome students back to campus safely in the fall, and laid out a series of possible measures to do just that -- including COVID-19 tests for students, faculty, and staff prior to their arrival on campus.

The Indiana State Department of Health reported seven additional deaths Monday, bringing the state’s total to 569. State Health Commissioner Kris Box says deaths reported to the state are often lower over weekends. The state announced more than 11,500 total confirmed cases, with almost 65,000 Hoosiers tested.

Tippecanoe County’s confirmed COVID-19 case count rose to 58 Monday, and the Indiana State Department of Health announced 505 new cases statewide for a total of 11,686. 

ISDH also reported 569 Hoosier deaths from the novel coronavirus in its daily update. 

On Monday, Tippecanoe County ranked 34th out of Indiana’s 92 counties in total confirmed COVID-19 cases. Marion County’s caseload remains the highest, with 4,052 confirmed cases and 192 deaths as the week began.

Holcomb To Extend 'Stay-At-Home' Order, Elaborates On Reopening Economy

Gov. Eric Holcomb says he’s asking for input from businesses and associations across the state to help determine what sectors of the economy may begin to gradually reopen.

Holcomb announced Friday he would be extending the state’s “Stay-At-Home” order through May 1, falling in line with neighboring states. Holcomb says he is working with the Indiana Hospital Association to ease restrictions on elective procedures, as long as personal protective equipment supplies and hospital capacity remain level.

Purdue University’s College of Veterinary Medicine will begin using a lab that tests for infectious diseases in animals to conduct COVID-19 testing for humans.

Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory director Dr. Kenitra Hendrix says the lab ran 15,000 tests on animal samples through an automated testing system in 2019. They plan to process 400 human COVID-19 tests a day.
