Gleaners Gets Efficient With Help From Amazon

An Indiana food bank is getting food distribution tips from Amazon. Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana moves an average 30 million pounds of food to food insecure households each year. 

The online retail giant’s community program for food banks is called Kaizen which is Japenese for "change" says Amazon Director of Operations Mishtee Chatterjee.

A Senate committee on Monday approved a bill that would extend Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits — also known as SNAP or food stamps — to former offenders convicted of certain drug-related offenses.

A federal law prohibits former criminals convicted of, for example, trafficking controlled substances, from receiving food stamp benefits. States can choose to do away with the federal ban with a positive legislative vote.

Food Finders distributes record amount to those in need

The head of Food Finders Food Bank says the need for assistance in the Lafayette area has never been greater.

Executive Director Katy Bunder says agencies the food bank serves are at the warehouse doors from the minute they open in the morning until closing time. She says they are thinking of establishing a night shift to keep up with pulling orders and restocking shelves.
