Food Finders distributes record amount to those in need

The head of Food Finders Food Bank says the need for assistance in the Lafayette area has never been greater.

Executive Director Katy Bunder says agencies the food bank serves are at the warehouse doors from the minute they open in the morning until closing time. She says they are thinking of establishing a night shift to keep up with pulling orders and restocking shelves.

Hunger Hike 2011 proceed benefit 3 nonprofits

Hunger Hike 2011 raised nearly $93,000 to benefit three local groups.  The money is being evenly split among Lafayette Urban Ministry, Food Finders Food Bank, and the St. Thomas Aquinas Haiti Project.

LUM Executive Director Joe Micon says the need for programs to help low-income people in the area has never been greater.  He cites prolonged, high unemployment in the area and the strain on local food pantries.

Nearly one-thousand walkers and runners participated in Hunger Hike 2011.

LUM's Jubilee Christmas to Help Families in Need

Lafayette Urban Ministry is joining forces with local churches, businesses, and individuals to provide for those in need this holiday season. The 31st annual Jubilee Christmas Program is set to give toys, food, and clothing to 715 households and 1,900 children in Tippecanoe County. The initiative is supported by volunteers from around the community. Director Sandra Dunn-el says the event helps lifts the spirits of families going through challenging times. The Jubilee Christmas Program takes place December 10th at 25 sites in Greater Lafayette.

Man Killed by Train Identified

A person has been killed after reportedly walking in front of a train in downtown Lafayette.

Emergency crews were called to Riehle Plaza around 8 a.m. Thursdsay.

Police identify the man as Brad Babcock, 20, of West Lafayette.

Witnesses say he stepped onto the tracks in front of the approaching Amtrak train, which was bound for Chicago.

The incident is not considered at criminal matter, but is under investigation by the Tippecanoe County Coroner.
