Lafayette projects prompt sewer fee hike

Sewage rates for Lafayette residents could be increasing 30% by January 1st, 2015.

City Engineer Jenny Miller says the money is needed to help pay for $33 million in storm water improvement projects.

She says the work involves separating storm water and sanitary sewers from the Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds area along 18th Street up to Kossuth Street.

Lafayette taking more steps to improve Wabash River

Lafayette officials have a better idea of how much two projects will cost the city. The Board of Works opened bids for the Cincinnati Street tunnel extension and North Street reconstruction. Both are expected to help the quality of the Wabash River.

The city is extending its combined sewer storage tunnel system that is downtown. City Engineer Jenny Miller the new section will run from Riehle Plaza north along the railroad tracks to where Cincinnati ends at Third Street.

Electrician License Passes First Hurdle

Electricians may soon need a license to operate in Lafayette.

The city council unanimously approved a measure requiring those in the profession to become certified.  Currently, anyone can do electrical work.

City Engineer Jenny Miller says the change protects the city, businesses, and residents.

The Ordinance Committee will review the proposal over the next 30-days prior to the second reading.

Miller says the group will aim at clarifying some of the language and make sure the policy is as thorough as possible.

Lafayette looks at licensing electricians

Electricians in Lafayette could soon need a license to operate.

An ordinance with that requirement for all electrical workers is scheduled to appear before council members next week.

City Engineer Jenny Miller says the move would increase safety for Lafayette residents. She thinks it won’t be hard for established electricians to get licensed, if they have the necessary experience.

Miller says substandard work her office has come across is the reason for requiring a license .
