Loeb Stadium

Lafayette Mayor's Office

A sports marketing firm has gotten City of Lafayette officials to play ball when it comes to selling beer at Loeb Stadium.

The park has been home to several teams in the past 70 years, but none has lasted more than a few seasons. So what makes Mayor Tony Roswarski think this time will be any different?

We also talk more about crime on today’s program. A listener writes in to say she’s worried about her neighborhood.

And the city is hoping sending more police cars home with officers will stem the rising tide of violence. But is that an admission something’s wrong?

Lafayette’s Loeb Stadium, the 75-year-old 3,500-seater in Columbian Park, is home to the Colt World series, American Legion baseball and Jefferson High School’s team. But when it comes to professional ball, things have never quite worked out for the ballpark.

As was announced this week, a consortium that owns several Midwestern collegiate teams is ready to try again.

Lafayette city leaders made it official Tuesday: a summer league baseball team will call Columbian Park’s Loeb Stadium home, starting next summer.

The city has been in negotiations with Milwaukee-based sports marketing firm MKE Sports and Entertainment since spring, and this week inked a deal that leases the city’s stadium to the firm,  which will develop a new team to become part of the collegiate wooden-bat Prospect League.

Weather causing delays in Loeb Stadium renovation

Feb 11, 2014

The first phase of the Loeb Stadium renovation project will take longer to complete.

The work was expected to wrap up March 1, but that’s been pushed back to March 15 due to weather delays.

Jeremy Duff with KJG Architecture outlined the need for an extension to Lafayette Park Board members.

“It’s been challenging to complete our projects because of the extreme weather conditions,” Duff said. “We’re working with outdoor projects and the snow doesn’t make construction easy.”

The first phase of updating Loeb Stadium in Lafayette will begin soon.

The Park Board awarded contracts totaling $272,000 to Kettelhut Construction. Work includes building a new locker room off the right field side, where the grandstands were. Funding comes from the tax increment financing (TIF) district.

Senior Project Manager Alex Gonzalez says that project will be done over the winter.

Widespread storm damage reported in Tippecanoe County

Nov 18, 2013

Nearly 12,000 Duke Energy customers in Tippecanoe County remain without power this morning, after a series of strong storms swept through the area yesterday.

Tipmont REMC is still working to restore power to a few thousand homes.

Heavy rain and high winds brought down trees and power lines and caused damage to homes, schools, and businesses.

Much of the destruction occurred in the southern portion of Tippecanoe County.

Southwestern Middle School and Mintonye Elementary School each sustained significant damage, although no injuries were reported.

Worked planned for Loeb Stadium in Lafayette will address the immediate needs of the 75 year old facility.

Parks Superintendent Ted Bumbleburg says the first phase includes waterproofing and concrete repairs. He says they also will construct a small locker room building.

Cost estimates will be known once bids are submitted.

The timeline calls for the work to be done this winter and completed by March 1, so the stadium is available for the start of baseball season.

Lafayette Parks and Recreation officials are reviewing results of two surveys – one on the five year master plan and the other on Loeb Stadium.

Superintendent Ted Bumbleburg says 370 people responded to the master plan questionnaire and 640 gave input on Loeb.

“We did find, and it kind of goes along with the park master plan, that expanding trails and pathways are one of the big things to do in the city and parks,” he says. “Loeb Stadium just was on the repairs, or the renovation, is where we got the most responses.”

Tonight’s meeting gets underway at five o’clock at Rush Pavilion in Columbian Park.
