Proposals to extend local roads came under fire at a Montgomery County Plan Commission meeting Wednesday evening. Residents voiced concern over eminent domain, safety and other infrastructure needs as the commission considered a drafted thoroughfare plan.

The plan includes several areas for improvements or changes, including some new roads that would add more connections to existing ones.

Officials are one step closer to finalizing regulations on commercial-scale farms in Montgomery County, after the county plan commission selected members for a confined feeding operation study committee Monday.

The plan commission selected 13 members for the committee: four farmers, four rural residents, two realtors, two school officials and one member of the plan commission itself – Ashley Adair.

Adair says her goal is to both research the impact of CFOs and to get community input.

A final vote on Montgomery County’s first zoning ordinance will have to wait until after elected leaders sort out the proper process to move it forward.

County commissioners removed the proposal from the agenda of their Monday meeting, citing procedural issues. Now, the proposed ordinance has to go before the plan commission a second time before the commissioners can vote on it.

A draft comprehensive plan for Montgomery County was overwhelmingly approved by the county Plan Commission Wednesday, with only one member voting against it. If approved by county commissioners, it will be the first such plan for the county.

Project manager Chris Hamm presented the plan draft to the commission. He says many residents would like to preserve what Montgomery County already has.

“They want the vast majority of Montgomery County to stay rural, to stay agricultural,” he says. “And you can do that as part of this planning process.”
